TIL: NVIDIA DLSS


NVIDIA DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling.

I have seen it in driver updates. I have enabled it in my graphics settings. So what’s the deal?

AFAIU, DLSS is a family of technologies that use machine learning to improve quality without degrading performance:

  • DLSS Super Resolution: AI is used to upscale the rendered frame to a higher resolution. This means that the GPU can render at a lower resolution (which reduces the load) and the gamer can still enjoy the higher resolution on the final frame.

  • DLSS Frame Generation: AI is used to generate intermediate frames between the actual rendered frames. This effectively improves the frame rate without asking the GPU to sweat more.

The effect is very noticeable. Here’s a comparison I recorded with/without DLSS enabled, same level of detail. DLSS is set on “Quality” mode, and FPS are almost doubled:
